Halfway Houses

A halfway house or a sober living home is a place where drug users respectively are allowed to move more freely than in a prison but are still monitored by staff and/or law enforcement. The major problem with these facilitations are the opposition that is faced from neighbors where halfway houses attempt to locate.

Halfway houses are not for everyone, but some may succeed in their existence. They do allow more freedom and more real world experience versus entering a rehabilitation center. However, they do require more rules because these are generally located among and in residential areas. Usually the people entering treatment centers have not been convicted of drug use yet. Those entering halfway houses have been convicted so are therefore under close supervision during their recovery.

So the question is, are halfway houses successful? Do they offer the same treatment as rehabilitation centers?

Treatment in a rehabilitation center is much more focused because those in the centers do not have outside influence. Those living in a halfway house must confront everyday temptations while on their way to recovery. Living in both require regular attendance of meetings and such, but treatment centers do offer specialized help always available when needed, where a halfway house does not.

Both are successful in their own ways, but they are not the same kind of experience either. While living in a treatment center during your recovery it may be easier to focus on the task at hand without having to deal with outside influences. This may be a hinderence in some ways though. When the patient is ready to go home they must then learn to deal with their everyday lives completely differently from how they used to. They must learn to live their lives without the dependency of drugs and some may stuggle with this at first.

The advantages of living in a halfway house is the fact that you learn to live without drugs while continuing with your everyday tasks. This may not always work in every scenario because it could cause it to be harder to leave the drugs behind and move on with your recovery and with your life.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but the decision of which is the best option clearly depends on the person.
